The listing
SmarterDx is transforming how health systems use clinical AI to capture the full value of patient care delivered. Built by physician-data scientists and trained on clinically-validated EHR data, our clinical AI platform interprets the nuances behind every patient story and makes clinically-sound recommendations for revenue cycle teams — helping hospitals recover earned revenue, improve quality metrics, reduce denials, and streamline revenue cycle operations. As a Smartian, you’ll help build technology that makes healthcare more accurate, sustainable, and effective for everyone. Learn more at smarterdx.com/careers.
You are a healthcare integration engineer with deep expertise in interface engine development and HL7. You are equally comfortable developing complex interfaces, managing integration platforms and their cloud-hosted environments, and supporting mission-critical production integrations. You understand how to diagnose issues across interface engines, HL7, applications, network connectivity, and infrastructure, and bring the hands-on expertise needed to own problems through resolution.
You will be a technical owner of SmarterDx’s healthcare integration platform, with a primary focus on interface development, platform operations, production support, and technical best practices. Our platform processes a high volume of healthcare data across customer connections, making reliability and availability critical. You will help establish the standards, processes, and documentation that keep our integrations reliable and maintainable as we grow.
While this is primarily a hands-on technical role, you will also work directly with customer technical teams when needed to support implementations, connectivity, troubleshooting, and other integration needs.
At SmarterDx, your work will directly enable our mission of empowering hospitals to tell the most accurate patient stories.
***This role is fully remote within the US***
What You’ll Do
- Design, develop, test, deploy, and support healthcare integrations throughout their lifecycle, including routes, communication endpoints, filters, message transformations, mappings, and connectivity, primarily using HL7v2 across major EHR platforms including Epic and Oracle Health/Cerner.
- Serve as a technical owner and subject matter expert for SmarterDx’s integration platform, including configuration, administration, monitoring, upgrades, and production operations.
- Partner with Infrastructure and Security teams to operate our integration platform in a cloud-hosted environment, including AWS, VPN connectivity, networking, TLS/certificate management, HTTPS endpoints, and secure customer connectivity.
- Maintain the reliability and availability of our high-volume integration environment through proactive monitoring, safe change practices, and capacity and performance planning as message volumes and customer connections grow.
- Define and implement integration development and operational best practices, including reusable components, configuration standards, testing, change review, environment promotion and deployment, technical documentation, and documented operational processes.
- Serve as a senior technical escalation point for production issues, leading troubleshooting, root cause analysis, message recovery/reprocessing when needed, and durable remediation across the integration platform, HL7, connectivity, infrastructure, applications, and external systems.
- Participate in an after-hours on-call / Tier 3 support rotation for high-priority integration and platform incidents, with a focus on rapid recovery and minimizing customer impact.
- Serve as a technical point of contact for integration platform support cases, platform questions, upgrades, capacity planning, and technical escalations.
- Collaborate effectively within Integration Engineering and across Infrastructure, Security, Product, and other teams to solve technical problems and improve integration practices, while working directly with customer technical teams as needed during implementations, connectivity setup, and production support.

- Experience owning or administering an interface engine in a production environment, including configuration, monitoring, deployment, message recovery, troubleshooting, and operational support.
- Expert-level HL7v2 knowledge, including message structure, common message types and trigger events, acknowledgements, transformations, sequencing, and error handling.
- Strong JavaScript experience for message transformation and workflow logic; familiarity with Python or other scripting languages is a plus.
- Working SQL proficiency for validation, troubleshooting, and operational analysis.
- Experience supporting high-volume, mission-critical integration platforms in AWS or similar cloud-hosted environments, where reliable message delivery and availability are essential.
- Strong understanding of TCP/IP, MLLP, HTTP/HTTPS, TLS certificates, DNS, firewalls, VPNs, and secure connectivity.
- Strong production support and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to isolate and resolve failures across interface engines, HL7, applications, network connectivity, infrastructure, and external dependencies.
