The listing
Role Overview
Our client is seeking a detail-oriented, systems-driven accountant to support a private capital client. The client is a debt fund sponsor with multiple active funds and related operating entities. The role centers on day-to-day bookkeeping, month-end close, and reconciliations, working alongside the client's fractional controller who owns fund accounting and fund administration.
This is a hands-on, task-driven role, and the recurring work has to be done accurately and on time. What separates a strong candidate is judgment alongside execution: understanding how the transactions they record roll up into fund and entity financials, working cleanly, documenting their work, and raising issues rather than waiting to be asked. Over time, this person should be able to take on additional areas in support of the controller.
Strong accounting fundamentals and hands-on QuickBooks experience are required. This is not a traditional institutional fund accounting role. The strongest candidates have real fund accounting experience — equity or debt — built at private placement funds, syndications, real estate sponsors, family offices, or boutique fund administration firms. Property-level real estate accounting is welcome but not expected; we train for it.
Reporting & Working Relationship
· Reports to the fractional controller assigned to the client.
· The controller retains ownership of fund accounting, fund administration, and client-facing deliverables.
· This role assumes the recurring bookkeeping, clerical, and close-cycle work so controller time is reserved for review and advisory.
· Primarily internal-facing, with written communication held to a client-ready standard.
Core Responsibilities
Day-to-Day Bookkeeping & Transaction Processing
· Maintain accurate general ledger records in QuickBooks Online across fund and operating entities.
· Process accounts payable and expense coding (Ramp, Bill.com, or equivalent).
· Record and categorize bank and credit card activity on a recurring basis.
· Maintain organized, review-ready documentation and support for all postings.
Month-End Close
· Execute recurring month-end close tasks under the direction of the fractional controller.
· Prepare and post accruals, prepaids, and standard recurring journal entries.
· Prepare supporting schedules and tie-outs for the balance sheet and income statement.
· Assemble draft financial statements for controller review.
· Confirm completeness and accuracy of financial data before reporting deadlines.
· Support the annual audit — maintain workpapers that are clearly labeled and tied to source support throughout the year, and prepare requested schedules and documentation for auditors.
Reconciliations
· Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations.
· Reconcile loan statements and tie amortization schedules to interest activity.
· Perform balance sheet account reconciliations and maintain continuity schedules.
· Identify, research, and resolve stale balances, unreconciled items, and discrepancies; escalate what cannot be resolved.
Intercompany Activity
· Record intercompany transactions between funds, the sponsor, and related operating entities.
· Reconcile intercompany balances each period and confirm both sides agree.
· Maintain schedules supporting intercompany due to / due from positions.
Fund Accounting Support
· Support the controller in recording fund-level activity, including investor capital contributions and redemptions, investments into underlying deals, interest and distribution receipts, returns of capital, and fund-level operating expenses.
· Assist with quarterly NAV file preparation and investor reporting support schedules.
· Execute supporting tasks in the client's investor management platform as directed.
Success Profile — What “Good” Looks Like
30 Days
· Understand the client's workflows, client entity structure, and documentation standards.
· Execute recurring bookkeeping and transaction coding accurately with supervision.
· Produce clean, well-organized workpapers that require minimal cleanup on review.
60 Days
· Run standard bank, credit card, and loan reconciliations independently.
· Complete assigned month-end close tasks on schedule with limited direction.
· Post and reconcile routine intercompany activity accurately.
· Identify discrepancies early and escalate them with proposed resolutions.
90+ Days
· Own the day-to-day books and the recurring close calendar for the assigned client.
· Deliver complete reconciliation packages and supporting schedules ready for controller review.
· Anticipate recurring items and prepare them without prompting.
· Support fund-level and investor reporting deliverables with accuracy and on time.
Core Attributes
· Be of Service — anticipates team needs and produces reliable, timely output.
· Be Innovative — improves workflows and surfaces inefficiencies.
· Be a Mentor (in time) — documents processes and shares knowledge.
· Be Proud — delivers accurate, polished work consistently.
Requirements
Required Experience & Skills
· Hands-on QuickBooks Online experience maintaining a full general ledger. This is a hard requirement.
· 2–4 years of accounting experience, including fund accounting — equity or debt funds, syndications, or private capital.
· Demonstrated ownership of month-end close, reconciliations, and intercompany activity.
· Working understanding of month-end close mechanics and cut-off discipline, balance sheet reconciliations and continuity schedules, intercompany transactions and eliminations, and capital contributions, distributions, and basic fund structures.
· Advanced Excel skills — data organization, imports, lookups, and reconciliation workpapers.
· Exceptional attention to detail and a low tolerance for rework.
· Strong critical thinking — able to work through unfamiliar transactions, reason toward the right treatment, and pick up new systems quickly.
· Strong written English; work product should be client-ready with minimal revision.
· Ability to manage recurring deadlines across multiple entities and systems.
Preferred Experience
None of the following are required, but each strengthens a candidate and increases the range of Red Cedar engagements they can support.
· Debt fund accounting — loan servicing activity, interest accruals, and amortization schedules. General fund accounting matters more than debt-specific experience.
· Property-level real estate accounting — AppFolio Property Manager or similar, tenant ledgers, trust accounting, and property tax and insurance accruals.
· Investor management platforms — AppFolio Investment Manager, InvestNext, Juniper Square, Agora, IMS, or Cash Flow Portal.
· Sponsor-side environments — private placement real estate funds, syndications, or real estate sponsors.
Candidates whose experience is limited to hedge funds, mutual funds, fund-of-funds, or institutional NAV accounting are generally not a fit unless paired with direct private real estate or sponsor-side experience.
