Arts and Sciences | Evolution Ecology and Organismal BiologyThe Research Technician will assist with data collection for a research project investigating how native seed-dispersing animals (e.g., California Scrub-jays) can support post-fire oak woodland restoration in southern California. Job duties include (1) capturing, banding, and measuring wild jays using baited drop traps, (2) resighting and making behavioral observations of color-banded birds, (3) assisting setup and data collection for seed provisioning experiments, (4) data entry and similar routine tasks. The project is primarily based on The Nature Conservancy’s Dangermond Preserve along the coast of southern California.
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor's Degree in a biological sciences field or equivalent experience required. Minimum requirements may also be met by having the following: 4 years of relevant experience required with High School diploma or GED, 2 years of relevant experience required with Associate's Degree, or 0 years of relevant experience required with Bachelor's Degree.
Desired Qualifications
Have 3 months of experience collecting ornithological field data. Graduate-level training in ecology or related field. Proficiency in capturing and banding passerines. Ability to recognize problems and take initiative to solve them. Good communication skills. Good color vision is required for resighting color bands. Able to work alone and hike long distances in hot, rugged, and steep terrain. Able to live in a remote and communal setting. Valid U.S. driver’s license.

The pay range for this job profile is $19.47 - $25.19. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
This temporary position is contingent upon funding and will end on or before 1/8/2027 based on the continued availability of funding and performance.
