Leidos Energy | Homeland Sector | Technology
Role Overview
The Director, Innovation & Deployment leads the organization responsible for evolving how Leidos Energy creates and delivers differentiated value through technology. The team identifies opportunities to improve the business and its market value proposition through new technology, better application of existing technology, and changes to how technology is used, develops and tests solutions, communicates value propositions internally and externally, and deploys successful capabilities into operational use.
The opportunity is to build a repeatable capability for turning promising ideas and technology into operational advantage—moving quickly from problem to evidence to deployed solution. This leader will help shape the technology organization for the combined Leidos Energy business, bringing together the capabilities, experience, and strengths of Leidos and ENTRUST.
Success is measured by valuable capabilities reaching operational use and producing meaningful improvement—not by the number of technologies evaluated or prototypes produced.
Key Responsibilities
Identify and Prioritize Opportunities
- Engage with employees, business leaders, and technical teams to identify problems and opportunities where technology can materially improve outcomes.
- Consider existing Leidos and Energy capabilities alongside commercial, partner, and emerging technologies.
- Prioritize opportunities based on expected value, feasibility, risk, implementation effort, and ability to scale.
- Rapidly determine whether opportunities demonstrate sufficient value to scale, redirect, or stop investment.
Develop Working Solutions
- Lead rapid development, experimentation, prototyping, and testing to generate evidence and reduce uncertainty.
- Determine when to build, buy, configure, integrate, partner, or reuse existing capabilities.
- Apply the technology most appropriate to the problem rather than favoring novelty for its own sake.
- Incorporate users and operational realities throughout development.
Deploy and Transition Capabilities
- Own the path from identified opportunity through operational deployment—not simply prototype or demonstration.
- Address the technical, security, workflow, adoption, and organizational requirements necessary for successful use.
- Partner with Operations & Sustainment throughout development to ensure successful capabilities are ready for transition into ongoing operation and support.
- Transition successful capabilities into the sustained technology baseline and stop or redirect initiatives when evidence does not support continued investment.
Lead Innovation & Deployment
- Establish a repeatable approach that reduces the time and friction required to move from problem to evidence to deployed capability.
- Manage the organization, portfolio, resources, investments, and partnerships necessary to deliver the mission.
- Provide the Energy CTO and Business Area leadership with clear insight into opportunities, progress, risk, investment, and realized value.
- Build an effective, engaged team by bringing together existing capabilities, developing people and leaders, and creating opportunities for talent across the combined Energy organization.
Leadership Expectations
- Start with the problem, not the technology. Select technology based on the outcome to be improved, not its novelty.
- Bias toward working solutions. Learn quickly through building, testing, and evidence.
- Own deployment. Innovation creates value when capabilities reach operational use.
- Learn and simplify. Scale what works, change or stop what does not, and avoid unnecessary technology complexity.
- Operate as one technology organization. Apply capabilities and resources across team and organizational boundaries to achieve the best business outcome.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, information technology, or a related technical discipline and 12+ years of relevant professional experience; equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing technical organizations and multidisciplinary teams, including developing technical leaders.
- Demonstrated record of taking multiple technology capabilities, improvements, or technology-enabled changes from concept or experimentation through successful operational deployment.
- Demonstrated ability to identify high-value problems, evaluate alternative approaches, and use evidence to scale, redirect, or stop technology investments.
- Ability to communicate technology choices, evidence, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to senior business and technical leaders and lead effectively across organizational boundaries.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a relevant technical or business discipline.
- Deep understanding of energy, utility, engineering, or another engineering-intensive business, including how technology enables the work of technical professionals.
- Experience rapidly developing and scaling technology-enabled improvements within a complex or highly governed organization.
- Experience operating successfully in a large, matrixed organization.
