Company Overview
hermeneutic research is a best-in-class proprietary trading firm. It deploys research-driven discretionary and systematic strategies as well as makes strategic long-term investments. The partners' decade-long history of success in trading and business building and a firm-wide cultural emphasis on alpha generation, open debate, relentless iteration, and teamwork are key to the firm's continued expansion in a challenging market environment that has hamstrung competitors. A hard-wired emphasis on risk management and opportunistic market participation ensure that hermeneutic research will continue its growth trajectory in the coming decades.
Job Overview
We are seeking a Senior Event-Driven Researcher to strengthen the firm’s ability to interpret complex, fast-moving situations inside crypto markets.
The role focuses on crypto-native event catalysts—regulatory developments, protocol governance, token unlocks, and special situations—and translating them into actionable insight and tradeable opportunities.
You’ll research and synthesize fragmented and evolving information into a coherent view of what matters, what does not, and how it should inform positioning and risk for the firm.
This role sits within a best-in-class crypto research operation, where research directly informs decision-making and ideas are rigorously challenged and debated.
You'll work alongside on-chain and real-time intelligence teams, with access to unique data sources and proprietary tooling that most crypto firms don't have.
Key Responsibilities
- Advance the firm’s understanding of event-driven situations by developing deep, context-rich views that provide informational edge over the market. You'll own situations end-to-end, maintaining a running view as facts and narratives evolve.
- Monitor and interpret new information as it emerges, exercising judgment to distinguish signal from noise and clearly communicate what matters, what does not, and how it changes the decision set/probability tree.
- Identify actionable, asymmetric opportunities early, grounded in a well-developed understanding of the situation rather than reactive interpretation.
- Contribute to the development of the firm’s research capabilities, working with engineering to shape tools and workflows that support our event-driven trading style.
Requirements
- Prior experience (5 years+) in information and flows-driven research or trading, within a tier1 buy-side or proprietary trading environment.
- Demonstrated ability to operate in event-driven settings, where outcomes depend on interpreting incomplete information, incentives, and evolving situations rather than static fundamentals.
- Comfort engaging with a wide range of event-driven situations, requiring intellectual curiosity and the ability to quickly build conviction across diverse topics.
- Deep crypto experience is not required, but you should demonstrate genuine intellectual curiosity about the space and a credible path to ramping up quickly.
Backgrounds that tend to translate well include roles in macro, EM, FX, commodities, event-driven or special situations research, and other environments where information flow, positioning, and timing are central.
Backgrounds that tend to be a weaker fit include highly systematic or delta-neutral strategies, and roles focused primarily on long-only fundamental analysis rather than events and decision-making under uncertainty.
Desired Attributes
- Ability to go deep into details when required, while maintaining a holistic view of the situation and its implications.
- Ability to hold and adapt coherent views as situations evolve.
- Comfort with rigorous debate, constructive challenge, and the ability to collaborate effectively across research, trading, and engineering teams.
- Strong intrinsic motivation to become an exceptional, top-tier researcher.
Interview Process
- CV Screening – Review of your background and experience relative to the role.
- Initial Interview – Discussion focused on your ability to ask the right questions, exercise judgment with incomplete information, and frame event-driven situations.
- Technical / Case Interview – Evaluation of problem solving and writing skills.
- Co-Founder/CIO Interview – A concluding discussion to evaluate cultural fit, strategic alignment, and how you resonate with the firm’s values.
Throughout the process, you'll be assessed for cultural fit through our company values:
- Drive – We believe the best team members are deeply passionate about what they do. That passion fuels their growth, drives them to seek out the best teams, and leads them to hold high expectations of themselves in pursuit of excellence.
- Ownership – We aim to extend ownership as broadly as possible across the firm. In return, we value people who take initiative, step up when needed, and treat the company’s goals as their own.
- Judgment – We value those who see the big picture and focus on what truly drives impact and results. They use time wisely, adapt across domains, and always prioritize outcomes over comfort zones.
- Openness – We foster a culture of open communication, mutual challenge, and shared growth. We believe constructive debate and proactive knowledge sharing lead us closer to the truth—and better decisions.
- Competence – We work with people who bring exceptional intellectual strength. What sets them apart isn’t just what they know—it’s how they use what they know to navigate change, adapt quickly, and contribute meaningfully in fast-changing environments.
- Resilience - We perform under pressure. Markets move fast, and so do we—but we stay grounded, focused, and calm. We embrace uncertainty, learn from setbacks, and adapt quickly without losing sight of long-term goals.
