The listing
Roman aqueducts quietly carried water across cities and made daily life possible. Their value was not in the structures themselves, but in everything they enabled.
The Bank Accounts team plays a similar role at Mercury. We build the foundation for depository accounts*: managing money held in Mercury accounts and helping customers move money between accounts they own.
The work ahead is especially exciting: as Mercury is opening its own bank, this team will build a major part of the foundation needed to manage customer accounts at that scale. The systems and capabilities we build will support how customers open, use, manage, and move money between their accounts.
Your job as an engineering manager at Mercury is to make our banking* core run so smoothly that people barely notice it’s there.
In this role, you will:
- Lead a team of 4 to 8 senior engineers to deliver high-availability banking services.
- Translate company and product direction into clear, measurable team objectives.
- Build a predictable delivery system that makes progress, risks, and tradeoffs visible.
- Balance customer-facing improvements with platform reliability, operational readiness, and long-term maintainability.
- Partner with Product, Design, Risk, Compliance, and Operations to make Mercury’s banking products reliable, understandable, and useful.
- Hire and onboard engineers while maintaining a consistent, high-quality interview process.
- Hold the team accountable for using AI-assisted development responsibly, with appropriate testing, evaluation, review, and production safeguards.
- Give clear, useful feedback to engineers at every level.
- Create an environment where engineers can do their best work and grow their technical and leadership skills.
You should:
- Have demonstrated the ability to lead a technical team.
- Have experience building or operating reliable financial, banking, payments, or other high-integrity systems.
- Be comfortable working across product, policy, infrastructure, and operational boundaries.
- Be able to turn ambiguous problems into clear decisions, owners, and execution plans.
- Have strong technical judgment and the ability to engage deeply with system design and implementation.
- Have experience developing senior engineers and creating opportunities for engineers to lead.
- Care deeply about correctness, reliability, customer experience, and operational excellence.
- Be familiar with our tech stack (specifically, Haskell and TypeScript), or have an interest in learning it.
