The listing
We are hiring a Lead Database & Data Platform Engineer to take full ownership of our relational database estate. We are hiring the person who will own the database and data estate at TrustEngine end to end: assess what we have, run a time-critical upgrade as the first job, and then set the direction and standards that mature the whole environment. TrustEngine is the product of a merger, so we run two stacks — C#/.NET on Microsoft SQL Server, and TypeScript/JavaScript on MySQL — both in AWS. Our SQL Server is BYOL on EC2: we install, configure, and operate it ourselves, an on-premises setup that happens to live in AWS. MySQL runs on RDS.
The role sits on our Platform team and is the senior technical authority on data for both engineering teams. The immediate need is someone who can hit the ground running on a time-critical OS upgrade before year-end; the longer-term job is to leave the estate in a state we can stand behind with customers, auditors, and our insurer.
Why this role: We are a merged company running two stacks, and the estate has not had a single accountable owner. We are looking for someone who wants to fix it properly rather than patch it, and who will be given the mandate to do so.
What You'll Do
- Deep and current Microsoft SQL Server administration — this is the core of the role
- Recent hands-on experience with full SQL Server installation and configuration on a server you manage yourself — Windows Server on EC2 or on-premises — not a managed service such as RDS or Azure SQL. Must include OS-level work beneath a live production instance.
- Windows Server administration, including OS upgrades and migrations
- Most recent SQL Server upgrade performed, stated on the profile: source and target versions, in-place or side-by-side, year, and the Windows Server version pairing. Career-span claims without versions will not be considered.
- SQL Server high availability — Always On Availability Groups, failover clustering
- MySQL administration
- AWS — EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, CloudWatch
- AI proficiency (e.g., Claude) applied to day-to-day work
- 7+ years of experience
- Prior end-to-end ownership of a production database estate, including assessing an inherited environment and driving it to a measurably better state
- Experience setting data standards and reviewing schema and data-access design across application teams

- Data governance and data quality practice
