The listing
Experience: 10+ years in indirect tax (sales and use, excise, property tax) for a large, multi-state organization.
Overview
Our customer, a large US healthcare distribution company, is looking for an experienced Tax Business Analyst to support its Indirect Tax function. The role is part of a project to identify, document and strengthen the organization's indirect tax capabilities across six areas: compliance and filing, tax data management and reconciliation, advisory support, audit management, property tax assessment review, and the technology and systems that enable indirect tax work. The analyst works hands-on with the tax team, finance, IT and external advisors, and is expected to both perform the work and document how it is done.
Responsibilities
- Indirect Tax Compliance and Filing Management: prepare, file and remit sales and use, excise and property tax returns across multiple state and local jurisdictions; maintain the filing calendar and remittance controls.
- Tax Data Management, Reconciliation and Documentation Control: maintain, validate and reconcile all tax-relevant data (transaction data, exemption certificates, fixed asset listings, rates and rules); keep the supporting documentation complete and audit-ready.
- Advisory Support and Customer Inquiry Resolution: provide day-to-day indirect tax advice to internal teams (AP, billing, procurement, sales) and resolve customer tax inquiries, including taxability questions, exemption certificates and credits/refunds.
- Audit Management and Regulatory Response: manage state and local indirect tax audits end to end; respond to notices and information requests from tax authorities; coordinate with external advisors (for example EY, Ryan) on audits, appeals and voluntary disclosures.
- Property Tax Assessment Review and Value Challenge: review assessed property tax valuations for accuracy, identify over-assessments and lead value challenges and appeals where beneficial.
- Technology and Systems Enablement for Indirect Tax: operate the tax engine, ERP tax configuration and compliance/reporting tools used for indirect tax; define and test system changes, tax rates and rules updates and data integrations; document processes and capability gaps.
- 10+ years of indirect tax experience (sales and use, excise and/or property tax) in a multi-state corporate tax department or a tax advisory firm.
- Hands-on preparation, filing and remittance of indirect tax returns across many jurisdictions.
- Strong tax data reconciliation skills: general ledger to return, tax engine to ERP, exemption certificate management; advanced Excel.
- Experience managing state and local tax audits, notices and appeals, and working with external tax advisors.
- Property tax experience: assessment review, valuation analysis and appeals.
- Working knowledge of indirect tax technology: a tax engine (Vertex, Avalara, Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE or similar) and an ERP such as JD Edwards, Oracle or SAP; compliance software such as ONESOURCE or Vertex Returns.
- Business analysis skills: requirements, process mapping, documentation, UAT and clear written communication.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field; CPA, CMI or similar is a plus.
- Healthcare, pharmaceutical or distribution industry experience.
- Experience documenting tax capabilities, controls (SOX) and process improvements.
- Power BI, Alteryx or SQL for tax data analysis.
