About Fluent Software Group
Fluent Software Group acquires and grows vertical market software companies. Our portfolio businesses deliver mission-critical software to the industries they serve, and our Finance team provides the controllership, reporting, and M&A support that keeps the group scaling. As we continue to acquire, we are building a finance function that is technically excellent, systems-driven, and ahead of the curve on AI-enabled automation.
The Opportunity: Controller
The Portfolio Controller reports directly to the Portfolio Director of Finance and works as part of the broader Finance team. This is a technical role combining controllership, treasury, and compliance ownership. You will be the portfolio’s technical accounting specialist — owning the cash management process, ensuring robust internal controls and clean audit outcomes — while actively partnering with other department teams to raise reporting quality without becoming a bottleneck in day-to-day operations.
You will own the controllership and treasury function end-to-end: from intercompany reconciliation to IFRS 15 and 16, tax compliance, and cash management across your responsible businesses.
Location: Quebec, Ontario or Alberta (Remote)
International travel may be required for business process reviews and acquisition integration.
The salary range for this role is $100,000–$120,000 CAD per year, plus 10% annual bonus. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, and location.
What You’ll Own
- Own the preparation and review of all assigned business month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close deliverables, including the statement of cash flows and dividend declarations.
- Own the treasury function, including monthly cash requirements reporting, banking administration, debt management, working capital planning, coordinating dividend payment and maintaining accurate cash visibility at all times.
- Coordinate tax compliance obligations where required, specifically transfer pricing arrangements, corporate tax support, and compliance deadlines, consulting with external advisors as needed.
- Serve as the technical accounting lead for assigned businesses, providing guidance on IFRS 15, IFRS 16, IFRS 3, consolidations, and other complex accounting matters.
- Lead the intercompany reconciliation and recharges process across assigned businesses, including resolving complex discrepancies and improving consistency between entities.
- Own and strengthen the internal control environment across the portfolio, identifying financial risks, addressing control gaps, and supporting clean audit outcomes.
- Support acquisition integration from a technical accounting perspective, including step plan adherence, revenue recognition checklists, and PPA model review, as well as aligning newly acquired businesses with Fluent’s accounting policies and controls.
- Manage a team of 2–3, ensuring tasks are appropriately delegated and team members are coached and developed, while maintaining accountability for the accuracy and quality of their work.
- Partner with cross-functional leaders at the businesses and align priorities, financial risk, process improvements, and broader finance initiatives.
What We’re Looking For
- A minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience, including experience operating at a manager or controller level.
- CPA, CA, or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
- Previous experience operating at the manager level, with responsibility for overseeing key accounting processes and deliverables, including independently managing complex financial matters across multiple businesses or legal entities.
- Proven people management or team leadership experience, including coaching, supporting, developing, and reviewing the work of team members.
- Strong IFRS technical knowledge, specifically IFRS 15, IFRS 16, and IFRS 3, with essential consolidation accounting experience and exposure to complex intercompany transactions and internal controls.
- Advanced Excel skills; demonstrated experience using AI tools (Claude, Copilot, or equivalent) to automate finance workflows; Python or Power Query experience is a strong advantage.
Strongly Preferred
- Experience in both public practice accounting and a private industry accounting environment
- Previous experience within the software industry, particularly in a recurring revenue or SaaS environment.
- Hands-on experience with NetSuite and Power BI
