Job Description:

Role Overview

The Fire Protection Engineer plays a critical role in supporting Fluence's fire protection strategy across product development, testing, permitting, certification, and compliance activities. As part of the Engineering organization, this position contributes to the design, development, and implementation of safe and reliable Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) solutions, ensuring alignment with global fire protection standards, codes, and industry best practices.

Working closely with cross-functional teams including Product Management, Systems Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Safety, Quality, and Permitting, the Fire Protection Engineer I helps translate complex fire protection requirements into practical engineering solutions that support Fluence's growing global project portfolio. The role is responsible for analyzing fire risks, supporting product and project-level fire protection designs, evaluating compliance requirements, and contributing to testing and validation activities.

The successful candidate will apply engineering principles to improve product safety, support regulatory approvals, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. This position offers an opportunity to develop technical expertise in energy storage fire protection while contributing to innovation, operational excellence, and Fluence's commitment to delivering safe, high-quality energy storage solutions worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to understand fire code requirements and translate them into compliant product designs or permitting solutions.

  • Apply fire protection engineering expertise to diagnose issues, evaluate risks, and develop effective solutions for complex technical challenges.

  • Design and implement code compliance matrices to extract and document precise fire code requirements and resulting design responses.

  • Identify and address code deficiencies and unique local jurisdiction requirements for project deployments.

  • Support, develop, and deliver training programs to internal teams, external stakeholders, and Fire Departments to ensure proper firstresponder actions during a thermal event.

  • Participate in technical issue management activities to streamline communication, root cause identification, and solution execution.

  • Stay current on industry code changes, emerging technologies, and trends to enhance fire safety practices and contribute to organizational growth.

  • Support Sales and Permitting teams with technical expertise, including participation in permitting reviews, code negotiations, and customer inquiries.

  • Contribute to broader fire protection initiatives such as testing programs, industry code committee engagements (NFPA, IEEE, UL, CESA, ACP, EUCG), and international certification efforts.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent engineering experience.

  • 10–15 years of demonstrated experience in fire protection engineering or related fields.

  • Strong practical experience in: Fire protection design, Fire code compliance document development, CFD fire modeling and Fire protection permitting.

  • Proven ability to work independently on complex engineering projects with minimal guidance.

  • Strong analytical skills and problem solving capability, with the ability to interpret complex fire code requirements into sound technical solutions.

  • Experience negotiating with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) and navigating diverse code environments.

Additional Skills

  • Experience supporting largescale testing programs (e.g., deflagration, explosion, or battery variant testing).

  • Background in international certification requirements related to BESS fire protection.

  • Ability to mentor junior engineers or provide technical leadership on cross functional initiatives.

  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work with Sales, Product Development, Compliance, and Engineering teams.

  • Demonstrated initiative, ownership, and adaptability in a fast paced, evolving environment.
