About Us

FAR.AI is a non-profit AI research institute working to ensure advanced AI is safe and beneficial for everyone. Our mission is to facilitate breakthrough AI safety research, advance global understanding of AI risks and solutions, and foster a coordinated global response.

Since our founding in July 2022, we've grown to 50+ staff, published 40+ academic papers, and convened leading AI safety events. Our work is recognized globally, with publications at premier venues such as NeurIPS, ICML including a Best Paper Honorable Mention in 2026, and ICLR, and features in the Financial Times, Nature News, Wired Magazine and MIT Technology Review. We conduct pre-deployment testing on behalf of frontier developers such as OpenAI, independent evaluations for governments including the EU AI Office, and publish the AI Security Leaderboard based on our red-teaming expertise. We help steer and grow the AI safety field through developing research roadmaps with renowned researchers such as Yoshua Bengio; running FAR.Labs, an AI safety-focused co-working space in Berkeley housing 40+ members; and supporting the community through targeted grants to technical researchers.

The Role

FAR.AI is hiring a Senior Media Strategist to own our earned media: how our research and the people behind it show up in the press, on podcasts and in the newsletters that shape how AI risk is understood. You will decide which findings are news and how to position them, build and maintain relationships with the reporters who cover AI and AI policy, prepare researchers to be effective spokespeople, and manage the judgment calls that come with publishing work that finds failures in frontier models. You will report to Lauren Reid on the Communications team.

Why are we hiring for this role?

FAR.AI publishes research on how frontier AI systems fail and how to make them safer. That work matters only if the people who can act on it see it and trust it. Key to this is obtaining coverage that shapes what policymakers, funders and the public believe about AI risk. The AI beat is small, technically fluent, and tired of hype. We want a senior person who already knows AI journalism, has a view on how AI risk is being covered, and can make fast and informed judgement calls. This role gives our earned media a dedicated owner for the first time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own FAR.AI's earned media strategy, including a forward view of research releases, events and announcements and a plan for each one worth taking to the press.

  • Decide which findings are news, which outlets, podcasts and newsletters to approach, and how to frame them, working with researchers and leadership.

  • Build and maintain relationships with reporters covering AI and AI policy at national, international, trade and policy outlets.

  • Manage the judgment calls that come with publishing safety issues in frontier models: how hard to push and how to respond when a frontier developer pushes back or pre-empts.

  • Own researcher and leadership media training, including message development, briefing notes, and mock interviews for hostile or framing-driven questions.

  • Own inbound media requests, including deciding what we engage with and what we decline. This could include incidents and model-release news cycles, often on short notice.

  • Write and place op-eds and pitches, working with our technical writer on research explanations.

  • Set the goal for each release and hold us accountable to it.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years in media relations, press strategy or journalism, including leading campaigns yourself.

  • Established relationships with reporters covering AI and AI policy, and a record of earned coverage in top-tier outlets that you can point to.

  • An informed point of view on how AI risk is being covered and what good coverage looks like.

  • Judgment under competing pressures, including experience placing a story that criticized a powerful organization without burning the relationship.

  • Comfort with technically fluent reporters who will check the claims, and a habit of resisting hype in both directions.

  • Strong writing and fast turnaround: can produce a plan or a reply within hours when a release or incident creates a window.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A background as a working journalist on technology or policy.

  • Experience preparing researchers or executives for podcasts and broadcast interviews.

  • Experience designing or running media training programs.

  • Experience translating technical or scientific work for general audiences.

  • Experience running reactive communications.

Logistics

You will be a full-time employee of FAR.AI, a 501(c)(3) research non-profit.

  • Location: Remote globally. We can hire remotely in most countries.

  • Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week). You will work closely with US-based colleagues and journalists, so regular overlap with EST timezone is preferred (12pm - 5pm EST).

  • Hiring process: An application form, a recruiter screen, a paid test task, a hiring manager interview, an interview with members of our research and communications teams, and a values interview with a co-founder, followed by reference checks.

If you have any questions about the role, feel free to contact us at talent@far.ai. Otherwise, if you don't have questions, the best way to ensure a proper review of your skills and qualifications is by applying directly via the application form. Please don't email us to share your resume (it won't have any impact on our decision). Thank you!
