Position Overview

BPM is looking for a Payroll Specialist to join our Finance team. This is a full-time role that will support a growing payroll function and work closely with our Senior Payroll Specialists on a variety of payroll-related activities.

This role is ideal for someone with a solid payroll foundation who is eager to continue developing their skills and take on increasingly complex responsibilities over time. The Payroll Specialist will assist with payroll processing, payroll tax activities, reporting, reconciliations, employee inquiries, and other payroll-related projects.

This is not a data-entry-focused position. We are looking for someone who is proactive, adaptable, detail-oriented, and comfortable taking ownership of assigned responsibilities while supporting the broader payroll team.

Responsibilities and Scope

    • Support Semi-monthly, Bi-weekly, and Monthly payroll processing by reviewing, validating, and reconciling payroll data to help ensure accurate payroll payments, reporting, and records.
    • Assist with various aspects of U.S., Canadian, and UK payroll administration.
    • Support payroll tax activities, including research, reconciliation, reporting, and resolution of payroll tax-related issues. This role will assist with payroll taxes but will not have sole ownership of the payroll tax function.
    • Assist with payroll reporting and prepare recurring and ad hoc reports for the payroll team and other internal stakeholders.
    • Review payroll data and identify discrepancies, exceptions, or potential issues requiring additional investigation.
    • Ensure overtime and other payroll-related earnings are recorded and processed appropriately in accordance with applicable company policies and federal, state, provincial, and local requirements.
    • Analyze, audit, reconcile, and assist in resolving employee payroll issues.
    • Respond to employee payroll inquiries and provide clear explanations based on established payroll policies, procedures, and guidelines.
    • Work closely with Senior Payroll Specialists and take on additional responsibilities and increasingly complex payroll activities as experience and knowledge develop.
    • Partner closely with Human Resources, Benefits, and other internal teams on payroll-related matters.
    • Assist with payroll system maintenance, testing, audits, process improvements, and special projects as needed.
    • Support the payroll team with additional assignments and responsibilities based on business needs.
    • Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to take on new or unfamiliar tasks as the payroll function continues to evolve.

Qualifications

    • Approximately 2–3 years of payroll experience in a corporate environment
    • Experience supporting payroll for a multi-state U.S. employee population required.
    • Experience with payroll taxes required.
    • U.S. payroll experience required. Canadian payroll experience preferred.
    • Experience working in a payroll environment supporting a larger employee population preferred.
    • Strong Microsoft Excel skills required, including experience creating and working with PivotTables and VLOOKUP.
    • Experience with UKG Pro strongly preferred.
    • Experience using AI tools or technology to improve efficiency, reporting, or processes is a plus but not required.
    • Bachelor's degree preferred but not required.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
    • Ability to learn new systems, processes, and payroll concepts quickly.
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage deadlines and competing priorities.
    • Proactive and self-motivated approach with a willingness to take initiative and assist beyond assigned responsibilities when needed.
    • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Customer-service-oriented approach when working with employees and internal stakeholders.
