The Sr. Medical Bill Examiner (Certified Professional Coder) is an experienced claims professional responsible for the accurate review, analysis, and adjudication of complex medical bills. This role applies advanced knowledge of medical billing practices, coding standards, fee schedules, and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance, accuracy, and cost containment. Successful candidates will be responsible for performing Medical Bill review from a coding perspective and investigation of medical invoices to determine reimbursement based on applicable workers compensation statues and/or regulations including:
- Analyzing of bill for proper assignment of detailed medical coding information
- Interpreting workers compensation rules for repricing
- Entering/correcting data of medical bill information
- Accurate billing per the American Medical Association
- Review of medical documentation to support billing
- High attention to detail with strong documentation discipline.
- Ability to discuss coding to medical providers
- Requires a demonstrated level of competency relative to initiative, willingness to act
- Ability to deal with ambiguity, customer focus, composure, active listening, time management, priority setting and ability to multi-task.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfort handling complex or disputed billing scenarios.
- Requires an ability to break down explanations of complex processes and rules into manageable information
Minimum Qualifications:
- Certified Coding Designation is required.
- Medical terminology/coding coursework or experience preferred
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in medical bill processing or coding preferred
- Excellent data entry skills
- Strong working knowledge of medical coding (CPT, HCPCS, ICD), fee schedules, and billing regulations
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
- Demonstrated analytical, investigative, and critical‑thinking skills.
- Ability to manage workload independently while meeting accuracy and turnaround expectations.
- High school diploma or equivalent required
Additional Information:
- This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near one of our offices (San Antonio, TX; Lake Mary, FL; Sunrise, FL; Naperville, IL; Hartford, CT; Alpharetta, GA; Scottsdale, AZ) will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise. Only requirement is you agree to work the necessary core hours based on the time zones of the States that you are assigned to handle.

Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
