About the Role
H&H is seeking a Manager, Environmental Compliance & Sustainability to manage a team of Environmental Specialists and administer environmental compliance programs for U.S. and Canadian operations, with support for locations in the European Union, Australia, and Japan and for the company's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) projects. The Manager is one of the company's go-to technical authorities on environmental compliance and sustainability, reviews and guides site and corporate programs, and is the escalation point for the specialists.
You Will
Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in environmental compliance and sustainability, advising Operations (including fulfillment), Engineering, Pharmacy and Lab teams, Legal, Packaging, and site leadership.
Manage, coach, and develop Environmental Specialists: assign work, set priorities, and review deliverables. Serve as their escalation point for complex regulatory, permitting, and waste questions.
Administer corporate environmental programs and standards established by senior environmental and workplace health & safety leadership (hazardous waste, Tier II and other recurring reporting, KPIs) and ensure consistent application across U.S. and Canadian sites.
Review site-level compliance programs, permits, and regulatory submissions prepared by specialists (hazardous waste, HMBP, air, wastewater, stormwater, SPCC) for alignment with CAA, CWA, RCRA, EPCRA, and company standards.
Execute the environmental monitoring/peer review program across locations, review findings, and verify that corrective actions are completed and closed.
Support site leadership on significant inspections and enforcement matters by preparing technical information and responses; serve as the Operations liaison for routine inspections.
Review waste characterization and profiling for new Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and other waste streams, and guide sites on compliant handling and disposal at pharmacy, lab, and fulfillment operations.
Manage day-to-day performance of waste management vendors and environmental service providers within scope and agreements established by senior leadership.
Support waste reduction, diversion, recycling, and circular economy initiatives with Supply Chain and Operations; identify and recommend sustainability opportunities across assigned locations and implement approved programs.
Support the GHG emissions inventory and EPR projects, including data and packaging information gathering, registrations, and reporting, in coordination with internal data owners and external consultants.
When necessary, provide compliance and program support to locations in the European Union, Australia, and Japan, working with local teams and advisors within the company's established framework.
Provide environmental review for new builds, retrofits, and acquisitions, partnering with Project Management and Engineering.
Maintain and update environmental policies, procedures, and training content for approval by senior leadership.
You Have
Bachelor's degree in environmental science or management, engineering, industrial technology, business, or a related field.
8+ years of experience in environmental compliance, with demonstrated subject matter expertise in hazardous waste and environmental regulatory programs and working knowledge of sustainability and waste reduction practices.
Experience managing or leading environmental, health, and safety (EHS) employees or other technical staff, including reviewing regulatory submissions and providing technical guidance.
Working knowledge of federal, state, and provincial environmental regulations (CAA, CWA, RCRA, EPCRA) and strong multi-site hazardous waste program experience, including permitting, reporting (e.g., Tier II), agency inspections, and audits.
Experience managing waste vendors and supporting waste reduction and recycling programs.
Ability to support GHG accounting and packaging EPR projects, working with internal teams and external consultants.
Strong project management, analytical, and communication skills, and the ability to work in a matrixed environment.
Experience with environmental data management and reporting tools.
Willingness to travel up to 30% of the time, including regular travel to company sites in North America and potential international travel.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in environmental management, environmental science, or a related field.
Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) certification (strongly preferred).
Familiarity with packaging EPR requirements, recycling schemes, and circular economy principles.
Familiarity with OSHA and workplace health and safety requirements (e.g., HAZWOPER, hazard communication), and with management systems such as ISO 14001.
Experience supporting environmental programs and requirements outside the U.S.
Experience in laboratory, pharmacy, compounding, manufacturing, or fulfillment/distribution center environments.
